Was curious to see how BYU would do against a common opponent to the Utes so I watched the game last night. Couple thoughts on both programs:
1. Maybe it would be different if I were a frustrated fan after a loss, but I'm really surprised at some of the comments on Coach Rose. I think he's a phenomenal coach. Classy guy and more often than not has his guys ready to play. I think BYU is lucky to have him and should keep him around long-term. I think his defensive call last night was smart. SDSU isn't a great shooting team and the zone really frustrated them for long stretches. Also, BYU doesn't have the athletes that SDSU has, so anything besides a solid zone wasn't going to work.
2. Unlike Utah, BYU appears to have guys who aren't afraid to come off a screen and fire a shot.
3. #2 is also problematic at times. Since i wasn't emotionally involved in the game, I didn't really think the officiating sealed the Coug's fate. I thought it was in the 2nd overtime when they all started jacking threes from all over with 2 minutes still left. I didn't understand that. Seemed panicky. You can't control officiating. You can control your shot selection. There's hundreds of events throughout a game. It's easy to single out two bad calls. But what about missed free throws? Poor shots? Failure to break a press? Zone D breaking down leading to dunks and layups? The things that can be controlled play a far greater role in the outcome of games.
4. BYU fans should be encouraged by the game. SDSU is much quicker and more athletic and game wasn't decided until about a min left in the 2nd OT. They fared much better than the Utes (albeit on a neutral court).
5. Looking forward to the rivalry game. Should be a decently even match-up based on what I've seen from both teams so far.
