I really don't think there are plenty of days during the year to have a huge
family get together. Because of work responsibilities of all the individuals (usually family members), holidays are the best time to have the most people available for the get together.
Having said that, I prefer smaller gatherings, but my opinion is not shared by a lot of other people.
