Fair assessment. He's not a great coach. Great is as great does.
But he is a good coach and when you couple that with the other two, he's a great fit for the university.

And of course I'm a pollyanna, but I believe in that old saying, "if at first you don't succeed, try, try again." I haven't given up on the idea that with a couple of GOOD breaks...as opposed to Taysom Hill leg breaks...Bronco is capable of having a "great" season. And I think he has the character to keep getting up off the mat and trying.

BYU is BYU. It's a very, very unique university with an incredibly limited recruiting pool competing in a sport where athleticism reigns supreme. Why does the SEC keep winning the championships. Watch them play. They are loaded with athletes...of which maybe a handful on each team could handle the rigid environment of BYU.

We will probably never know what Bronco could do with a roster full of Alabama's athletes. I kinda think he'd win more than the 70% he's won so far. If anything, BYU generally meets...and occasionally exceeds expectations for the roster it's capable of compiling.

His goals are exactly right. Double digit wins, top 25, and the idea of building to compete for a national championship. Those are lofty goals for a school like BYU. It's not the 80's. Football has figured out the forward pass...offensively and defensively. If those goals weren't a stretch, they'd be pretty poor goals.

Fans everywhere have an inflated opinion of the possible. I've lived in Alabama 3 times. They think they should be in the National Championship every year. Folks on this board have a very inflated opinion of the possible at BYU. With the exception of a 5-6 year period when Lavell Edwards changed football, this has been it. This is what BYU is. Bronco is basically Lavell...after 1985. And that's not a bad thing.

He's also a great ambassador. Nope, he's not a great coach. He may never get there. It's certainly a unique challenge to do that at BYU. But he's a good man for the job.
