Biggest reason for disconnect between internal and external perception of Bronco
IMO the disconnect between what BYU fans and outsiders think of Bronco is the difference in the perception of BYU athletes. There is the perception out there that BYU athletes are similar to service academy athletes or Ivy League athletes, that our recruiting limitations take us out of the hunt for the best players and we have a bunch of really smart choir boys who were team captains in high school because they were high character kids but have maxed out their athletic potential.

BYU fans--well, many of them anyway--see BYU as a destination for at least a large portion of the best LDS talent, which is a pool that is growing and has produced NFL-caliber talent over the last decade. They also see BYU as a top destination for non-LDS athletes that value discipline and structure to their college experience, and a destination that is quite a bit athletically superior to service academies or Ivy League schools due to facilities, tradition, and ESPN.

I do remember Stanford being thought of in this way ten years ago. Then their football team stepped up and performed and Stanford athletes are viewed in a completely different way now. I wish BYU would do something similar...
