Sony is a business.
The movie was a miscalculation, but that doesn't mean that it should go forward. Managers are responsible to shareholders, customers and the public generally. Does Sony get sued for negligently going forward when the North warned of terrorist acts in theaters? Do shareholders then file a derivative suit for financial losses related to that, both direct and indirect? Will the public reward that risk taking by buying more tickets or giving donations? Does it want to dare NK hackers--who already perpetrated one of the largest data breaches ever--to come back do more with its data and networks? What is the upside of crusading vaguely for the cause of free speech?
