I conflated the issues with the beet farmers. On an economic basis, ALL of our
sugar should be imported. We are propping up a couple dozen rich families by paying MASSIVE subsidies to produce sugar in the US, when we should be importing it from the Caribbean and other places.
Sugar is terrible for us, independent of whether it comes from beet farmers or importers.
