I'm paid a salary and am allowed to take off whatever time I'd like, provided I am carrying my load and getting in a minimum number of billable hours a year. There is no system for tracking "vacation time," or "paid time off." It's just a matter of billing enough, which I always have. Once I get past the minimum billable, my hours start inuring to a yearly bonus.
So, in some sense, my job is really flexible. In other ways, very not flexible.
As far as attorney jobs go, I actually consider myself very fortunate. My billable requirements if lower than most places, and my employer would absolutely allow me to take time off. It just hasn't been in the cards for us to take a major vacation.
