some states allow companies to "cash out" your accrued vacation
Where cashed out means $0. HP did that to me in Washington. They refused to let me take vacation before leaving and then sent me a pay stub with $0. It was fun having a dude from Bangalore explain to me over the phone how the State of Washington allowed HP to do that. Now if I lived in CA, HP would have had to pay me for that vacation.
