It was impossible to tell on TV
But the announcers made a good point - you can tell by the sound. You can also tell by the trajectory of the ball. If it deflects at all then it was a touch (TV was inconclusive about that too.) In reffing basketball if a player jumps at a ball that subsequently goes out of bounds you can tell by the flight of the ball. It is easy to see even a slight change in direction.
