Multiple nation media members repored it, Tom Holmoe himself went on BYUtv in Corvalis prior to the Oregon St game and admitted as much, as far as I'm concerned anything other that Sunday play is an inexcusable reason to not get a deal done. If Sunday play was the issue then talks wouldnt have gone as far as they did. Also, we haven't heard much because BYU isnt typically the type to admit they royally screwed up.
