Like it or not, a lot of people are looking for reasons to call out BYU. It has everything to do with BYU holding itself to a higher standard than other Universities (and being very visible about that intent). Throw in a sometimes self-righteous fan-base and you get an exaggerated response to these types of situations.

Incidents like this do not help the good things that BYU does on and off the field.
