This loss is on the coaches, not the players.
The players played well enough to win the game in regulation, but too many dumb decisions by the coaches was too much for them to overcome. They didn't play perfectly, but they played well enough to win. The coaches are squarely to blame.

I can think of two decisions specifically. There are probably more.

1: Icing the kicker on the PAT. Seriously? I don't even know what to say about that. I was baffled when they called the 1st timeout. On the second, I just hung my head in shame. There was still 45 seconds left and all we had to do was get in FG range.

2: Dropping Kaufusi into coverage on 4th down. If the Memphis QB has less than 8 seconds on that play to find a receiver we likely hold them on 4th down. We'd finally found success by getting pressure on the QB in the 4th quarter and you decide to drop our best pass rusher into coverage on the most critical play of the game? Obvious passing down and you drop Kaufusi into coverage?!?! Absolutely maddening.

These aren't the kind of decisions that are easier to see with the benefit of hindsight either. These are decisions that college football coaches shouldn't have to think twice about.

Absolutely unbelievable.
