polled the youth and the feedback was that the dances were "boring and lame." The Stake spent a few grand buying a bigger sound system, strobe lights, smoke machines, etc. and started giving out pretty good door prizes to make it less boring and lame.
That didn't increase attendance. The reason was that they wanted their friends to come, but their friends told them, "I have to dress up for a dance? Your church is weird. Let's do something else."
I'm not advocating for "anything goes" I'm just saying that drawing the lines so far from what most would consider reasonable often has the opposite effect of what was intended.
