If you pay for the kid's seat (over 2), you can do this. If they are booked as a
child in a lap, then if there are extra seats open the gate operator for the flight can give you an extra seat for the child which would allow you to take their carseat on the plane. If no extra seats, then no luck obviously.
Always be nice to the gate operator for the flight. They put up with a lot of crap from angry travelers. And they can hook you up.
