One alternative would have been to accept something less than unconditional
surrender, such as sparing the Emperor, which the Japanese had already offered up. The premise that dropping the A-bombs and firebombing Tokyo saved lives is based on the assumption that unconditional surrender was the only alternative the US would accept, therefore necessitating either an invasion of Japan or wholesale slaughter of the Japanese civilian population.

It's not a stretch to say that the real reason we firebombed Tokyo and dropped the A-bombs was our insistence on unconditional surrender, as opposed to a surrender with a couple of face-saving conditions attached. And in the end we spared the Emperor anyway, which was the main condition the Japanese had requested.
