First off, I'll admit I don't follow recruiting nearly as close as a lot of you do. There's so many variables that you can't put much stock into star ratings, IMO. Of course, I'm always happy when we get a 4 star recruit, but if done the right way you can find 2-3* players that could have just as much potential.
But, I digress. My main point is that I think it's disturbing that for the past few years we haven't even been in the running for most of the biggest in state recruits. Gustin, Masina, Empey, Kafentzis, etc. These are all in-state recruits from just THIS YEAR we basically had no shot at. It's been an established pattern for a few years now. At least most of them are going out of state and not ending up at a rival in state school.
Is this a deliberate strategy by the coaching staff? Does Martzen or someone else on the staff feel like the talent pool is too shallow and thus time is better spent recruiting in other states? I hope that is their game plan and it pays off because it sucks losing out on so many high ranked recruits right in your own back yard year after year.
