A reason BYU sometimes doesn't show early, hard interest in certain legacy kids
& in certain major-prospect Utah county kids: Bronco & staff are sick of dealing with the kids & parents of this group with entitlement issues. And sick of dealing with their politics & their crave for validation & importance.

And I honestly don't blame them. Landing these kids likely amounts to a major, major distraction to team moral & chemistry. And not landing them amounts to a stressful waste of time for our staff. Recruiting is always a risky affair, but there's nothing like getting the run-around & condescension act from folk who should be grateful & respectful to BYU.

Let's face it: there is a strong tendency for BYU to get used by folk in this group who for whatever reason aren't loyal to BYU. They like to remind BYU that their kid is really too good for BYU & could (& probably should) go elsewhere.

If I'm a coach who deals with this all the time it's quite likely I get to the point I simply identify it early--& for the sake of my team & program--avoid it. I know it's frustrating to watch these kids go elsewhere in what looks (from our often naive vantage) to be an issue of neglect & pride on the part of our staff. Unfortunately I've lived (& endured) Utah County long enough to know that the neglect & pride are much more likely to come from the other side--NOT from those representing BYU.

I'm not saying the coaches don't miss on occasion (& Bronco's openly acknowledged it in the case of a few players), but it's not too hard to see there's often a whole nother narrative going on. Gustin's parents were a pretty loud & easy read in this regard, but I have no doubt there are plenty of folks & their kids who are every bit as bad--but are much more subtle in going about it. We simply have no idea what our coaches have to deal with in entertaining these people.

But it really doesn't take too much brain power & shrewdness to grasp what likely goes on quite regularly. Bronco no doubt uses his camps to not only identify talent--but to identify what kind of parents & situation he's dealing with in the locals. If we're really fans of BYU (like most of us are) we should tend to be more sympathetic than angry with our staff--in what amounts to a frustrating loss of athletic talent from our own backyard.
