1. Bach- well tempered clavier- the 48 (Old Testament of music) intellectual and emotionally overwhelming, st Mathew passion, Brandenburg concertos, Goldberg variations, a million other works.. always #1
When biologist Lewis Thomas was asked what message he would choose to send into outer space in the Voyager spacecraft, he said: “I would send the complete works of Johann Sebastian Bach … but that would be boasting.”
2- Beethoven his piano sonatas (the New Testament of music), of his symphonies my favorite is the pastoral #6 (at the moment) and his 5th piano concerto "emperor", etc etc
3- Mozart, if only he would have lived longer, currently listening to the requiem , the magic flute, I like his piano concertos better than his symphonies, But they are all masterpieces especially the later ones. I think of him like Schubert in everything he writes seems so natural, easy..
4- Schubert - transparent music so lyrical , underrated symphonies, very much like Mozart when I hear him, reminds me of water. Sometimes he's above Mozart for me . If only he could have lived longer too
