The vast majority of professional athletes make less than $50K a year
And in fact per Salary.com the median pay for an American professional athlete is $32K.

Consider all the minor league baseball players. All the arena football and Canadian football players. All the NBA-D league and minor league hockey players. Then consider all the competitors in the minor leagues of non-team sports. How much does the 100th ranked professional bowler earn? How much does the 1000th ranked golfer or tennis player earn? How much does the 100th ranked snowboarder earn (assuming there is a way to figure out such).

That said the same is true of any celebrity driven salary structure. The median wage of an actor? $52K. For every Leonardo DiCaprio there are 10,000 joe schmoes doing corporate trade shows.
