A take on recruiting
I am not suggesting that I am as please as possible with BYU football recruiting. I do think we have lost some guys who should be coming. However, I'm also not thoroughly disappointed in our recruiting this year overall as so many seem to be. Here's why:

1. We offered 7 4* recruits this year (I am basing this on ESPN recruiting rankings, I like those better than Scout). One, Mika Tafua, is headed our way. None of the other 6 are going to Utah or Utah State. None are legacy kids (to my knowledge, not counting Gustin as we didn't offer him).

2. You have to go all the way down to Empey to find the highest rated kid we have lost to Utah on. Gabe Reid could take that position if he commits to the U, and that would be disappointing, but Reid is a pass rusher. With Tafua and Kaufusi in this class, we have two good pass rushers there already.

3. BYU's recruiting has been strong outside of Utah. This is a positive in my opinion. The talent pools in states like Texas and California are substantially deeper, and I believe those recruits have played higher level football in high school than kids from Utah have. I am not dissing Utah high school football, but I think we sometimes get a little too worked up over 3* recruits from Utah; everyone that goes elsewhere does not represent the apocalypse of BYU recruiting, at least I don't think it will.

Obviously there are misses. Missing the legacy kids we have missed is disappointing. Not dominating in the state of Utah is disappointing, perhaps bordering unacceptable. But, I maintain that our class as a whole looks okay. The way forward is to start putting it together on the field.
