Recruiting
I think this has to be the most difficult part of any college coach's job. You have 17-18 year old kids who have been told most of their teenage years that they are special. A large number of them believe in their heart that college is only a step towards the professional league. Throw in the parents who want to be stroked as well and you have an almost impossible job.

I compare it in some ways with what I have to do in my own profession. The vast majority of staff members for Congressman or Senators are young kids (25-35) who have no experience in the real world but they are in a position where we have to tolerate them and stroke their own egos. I listen to many of them try to describe an issue and they have absolutely no idea about how the legislation they are proposing would work in the real world.

When you figure that in football they bring in 22-25 players per year and the hope is that 10 of them will turn out to be productive. And then you have to hope that you spread that success rate across the positions that you need filled. Kids are able to visit multiple schools where each coach tries to impress them and convince them that they will get them to the next level that they fully believe they are going to achieve. Then throw in the academic factor, both what they did in high school and what they have to do at a university and the difficulty becomes even more acute.

In the case of BYU you have to overlay all of this with the special requirements of living the honor code. Now you get a feel for how difficult it is to get the talent that you want and need to be successful in coaching. Not a job that I would want.
