Isn't that the whole point of it being a story problem?
That they can take a written scenario and figure out how you'd solve it? Otherwise you might as well just ask, 8 x 4 = ?

Story problems may very well be the most important questions on a math test and they're defeating their purpose. If you let the teacher explain it, then you're now testing them for listening comprehension and their ability to follow instructions rather than reading comprehension and problem solving.
