buy a used TIVO where someone bought a lifetime membership
you pay more, like $300-400 for an HD box, BUT the membership ALWAYS goes with the box, so I get tivo service for free. Even after replacing my old hard drive and new software, it is still tied to the box and is paid for.
Surprised someone trying to get out of monthly payments didn't know this.
