I own a cabin in wasatch county in addition to my primary home in Utah county. Because nobody lives in the cabin full-time it's considered a second home. The property tax rate is double that of a primary resident.
I'm paying more to support the new wasatch HS where I have no kids in school than the school my kids actually attend. I hardly use any county services yet I pay double what those who use them every day do.
I pay more property tax on a little cabin than my primary residence. I'd like to meet the genius that came up with this plan to talk about their sense of fairness. What's worse is Im not even allowed to vote there to throw the bums out of office.
I'm happy to pay my fair share like everyone else even though logic says I should get a discount because I don't use their services or schools, but paying double is a total scam.
I contested my assessment one year and presented 3 comps to back up my value claim with one being a property on the same street and they denied it. It was the most Mickey Mouse court I've ever witnessed. When I asked the judge (an appraiser hired by the county) what his justification was he only said, "it looks like a nice cabin." One of the committee members was in overalls at the hearing.
Whatever happened to no taxation without representation?
