This team would have won at least a couple of their close games if Rose would have decided at the beginning of the season that defense was an important part of basketball. I credit him for some minimal improvements over the past couple of weeks (too little, too late) and for installing hack-a-shaq during the second half of the Portland game, as this is one of the primary reasons they won the game. However, hack-a-shaq is usually a last resort for most teams, but was unfortunately the only resort for BYU since Rose hasn't practiced defense for most of this season.
It makes me sad to think what this season could have been from just a reasonable effort on defense (they haven't been ranked #200+ in field-goal percentage defense for most of the year by coincidence). Hopefully Rose will bring in a new assistant next year that can teach the team how to play defense.
