I'm still mad at Reid for alienating Pope. When Pope
committed to play for his hometown University of Washington Huskies out of HS, Roger told him, "Good choice because you aren't good enough to ever see the floor at BYU" Of course that only ostracized Pope further. One year later when the UW coach was fired, Pope decided to look for another home. There was one team Pope wasn't going to play for, yep, the team coached by Roger Reid. Instead, Pope signed with Kentucky and in 1997, BYU went 1-25, while Mark Pope won a national title as the starting center for Kentucky.

By the way, other LDS bigs that Roger Reid failed to recruit were Knight who won a title at UCONN and played in the NBA, Pollard who played for Kansas and in the NBA, Madsen who played for Stanford and in the NBA, and, of course, the nail in the coffin, Burgess who played at Duke and Utah and never really played in the NBA. If Roger Reid has landed 3 out of those 4 big men, then BYU would have enjoyed multiple trips to the Sweet 16 and perhaps beyond.

Oh. Sorry. This is a string about what a wonderful coach Mark Pope is. I agree totally. I was 100% pumped when they hired him. I have followed him since HS days when I was hoping against hope that he would come to BYU.
