As BYU-Ite said, we don't need to completely shelter our kids, but in a case where $20 can potentially save a life, that's a bet I'm willing to make. My kids shoot guns and bows, do all kinds of sports, take kayaks to the river, explore miles from our home on their own and are generally well-rounded. We don't helicopter them, but the experience in AZ taught us to suffer a little inconvenience (lightweight, comfortable bike helmets) for safety.
