1) BYU is still struggling with defense. We simply don't have the athleticism necessary to play consistent man to man defense against every team we face, even in the WCC. The necessity of playing zone then impacts our defensive rebounding and allows other teams more second chance opportunities and points. We won't go deep in the NCAA tournament without the ability to play man to man defense on a consistent basis, period.
2) College basketball, unlike the NBA, is backcourt-centric. Our strong backcourt aided us greatly in winning 20+ games even given our dumpster fire of a frontcourt.
3) We squandered a year in which 2 of our starting 5 were solid top 10 all-time BYU basketball players by having recruited bigs on a level just north of abysmal for several years previous. Even coming into this season we were depending on the fortuitous transfer of one Jamal Aytes. We also started a 5 who WAS NOT EVEN RECRUITED and fell, in a very timely fashion, directly into Dave Rose's lap. Imagine heading into this season with neither of those players on the roster. It's easy to magine because less than a year before this season, NEITHER were in our plans. Scary. That's what I'm talking about. As bad as it was, it could have actually been MUCH worse.
