2000s = American Idol insanity and the rise of autotune
The 2000s started with Pearl Jam fading and the Foo Fighters rising. Linkin Park was punk but not. Green Day was punk but not.
Then there was 30 Seconds to Mars, Disturbed, My Chemical Romance, Blink 182, Rise Against and so on.
From about 2005 onward autotune really started to kick in with Nickleback, Coldplay, Maroon 5, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, Beyonce, Nelly Fertado, Justin Timberlake and finally Katy Perry.
By the end of 2009 autotune stuff dominates the charts with the grunge/alternative bands fading into a secondary market.
