Spring Game Observation: Taysom runs because he has to. He doesn't see
the offense. He only throws once he sees a guy is open. I've watched this for 30 years and its always the same, when our QB understands where/when his receivers are going to be open and gets the ball out on time (before they actually become open), BYU football is exciting. When they don't, we struggle.

Our outstanding, athletic receivers and our below average secondary is perhaps masking this for the most optimistic fans, but it is clear Taysom either doesn't know where/when a guy is going to be open, or he doesn't have the confidence to anticipate it, or he just believes he is strong enough to wait? But on every occasion last night, he waited until he sees the open guy and then he tried to muscle it in. The ball is usually late and not where it needs to be. This has nothing to do with his leg injury, it is entirely between his ears and I have found this to be the case with most physically strong/gifted QB's when they are young. They trust in their arm strength and not their judgement.

This Season:
Against lesser competition Taysom's passing numbers will be good. But against the better teams we will be reliant on his running. Our running game should be good. The O-line is talented and our running backs are very good. Ho-Ching is going to be an awesome full-back. So get ready for more running and less passing against the good defenses. The frustrating part will be watching our talented receivers get open all over the field.

Our defense will be solid against teams with average to below average passing games. The front seven are very good. I even think the safeties will be very solid (#37 RS Freshman is a beast - 6'5" 223). The corner situation is disappointing, but that is average for the past 30 years. If we had a dominant D-line that would make them look better, but we don't. So get ready to pull your hair out again against above average passing teams.
