would you advise a kid to go to Stanford or BYU

My nephew has a 4.0, got a 31 on his act prep test and will probably score a little higher and has time to bump score up. Straight arrow, I don't worry about him religiously at Stanford. Loves engineering and the hard sciences, he is toying with the idea of becoming a surgeon. Plans to go to school a year then mission

Tuition is free if he gets into Stanford. Would likely get a schollie at BYU. 25th percentile at Stanford is 31, while 50th percentile at BYU is 28.8

I never had the grades to have opportunities like that at 17.

Would you encourage him to try for Stanford and have BYU be the backup? Thoughts?
