Have you read Malcom Gladwell's David vs Goliath? The data suggest a big fish in
a little pond proves better in the long run assuming he is in the bottom 2/3 at Stanford. If he can be a shining star in the Standford undergrad then do it (top 20%). But if the expectation is he is going to be in the middle of the pack vs some of the best minds in the country then his success both during and after school will be better served where he can be the big fish in the little pond.
