It's also interesting to think about where BYU is today and compare it to the
hopes and fears following the move to independence.

The move to independence was popular, but the viability of the move was very much in question at the time. Take a look at the schedules for the next couple of years. BYU made bold move and compared to the option of staying stuck in that bad TV deal, it has been a huge success.

That article seems to think the MWC was years away from an auto bid, but after Utah and TCU left, I don't think that's true.

It still seems the future isn't secure, but it's clear that BYU football has improved it's position by going independent.

The competition in the WCC has been a big improvement outside of men's bball. The WCC has not been as deep as the MWC, but it's been fine and the Zags are better than the old MWC teams. As long as BYU keeps scheduling a tough OOC in men's bball the team has it's destiny in it's own hands every year. I think the only big downside in the WCC has been the lack of commitment from the league to do the little things that a serious conference needs to do, like pay refs competitively. Hopefully that changes in time. The WCC looks like a great home unless a P5 option in all sports ever becomes available.

There were some recent possibly out of context quotes about BYU joining a P5 conference. That would be great, of coarse. Sunday play makes that look less than likely to me, so I'm just always hoping the independance picture will continue to improve.
