The 70s were a huge step forward for film making, but many of the great films
of that era are noted for the way they pushed forward the art form. Now many competent filmmakers stand on their shoulders and make films of equal quality. It's rare to see new techniques in cinematography and editing post 2000. We're still waiting for the next leap in artistic vision. Just because a film came first and set the trend doesn't make it better than someone else's film who came along and used the same techniques to tell their story. It just makes the first film more original and groundbreaking. Should a film's greatness be judged on that merit? That's for you to decide. I think you could argue that the 90s produced as many great films as the 70s.
