Garretson was injured most of last year. He really only had two wins. You've
credited him with the win over Wake Forest for some reason, even though Garretson only played the second half in a game Utah State was leading 29-7 at halftime. Garretson made a terrible pass early in the third quarter that was picked off and brought down to the 4 or 5 yard line and resulted in a TD that made the score 29-14. Then on USU's next drive he got a grounding penalty on third down, which resulted in USU having to punt on 4th and long and ended up leading to another Wake TD. In other words, Utah State was beating Wake Forest handily until Garretson came in. Utah State held on to win because it's defense played great -- not because of Garretson.

Garretson's two wins came against BYU and Air Force. We all know how bad BYU's secondary was. Air Force wasn't much better (their pass defense was ranked 101). Utah State didn't need "run support" in those games because the opposing secondaries were so bad. Also, AFA turned the ball over 4 times against USU, even further reducing Garretson's need for "run support."

Your assumption that USU's reliance on the pass in those games was because their running game was so awful that they had to just pass is off base. USU was just taking advantage of bad secondaries. Garretson is a decent QB, but a healthy Chuckie would've done just as good, (probably better) against the same defenses. I mean, an injured CK played much, much better than Garretson did in the Wake Forest game.
