Being realistic about BYU Football
I have been doing some thinking lately. (That can be dangerous from time to time). You know, in the past I have submitted that a large part of BYU Football Fans' angst has been the rise of Ute Football under Urban Meyer and Kyle Whittingham. To a lesser degree the rise of Boise State and Utah State have produced angst. I think we just all need to accept that the Utes have a good football program, as does BYU. Could it be better? Sure. But for BYU to elevate their game at the same scale by which the Utes have elevated their game over the past few years would put us in the same league as Alabama and Ohio State. It's just not going to happen. So I would suggest that we all come to grips that we can have two outstanding football programs in the state of Utah.

I am not saying this because of my love for the Utes. I am saying this because it's reality. I am also not absolving Bronco for some of his coaching miscues. He needs to get better, and I think he will. (At least I hope he will). You have to consider that he is doing as well as Lavell for the most part while playing harder schedules. Sure, Lavell has one big thing over Bronco, and that's a national championship. And the fact that Lavell beat the Utes on a regular basis. But Lavell's teams didn't face the kind of schedules that Bronco is now facing and will face in the future.

During this same time frame (past 10-15 years), I have noticed that Utah prep football has gotten much better. And the number of prime LDS football players has also increased considerably. That is partly why teams like Utah and Utah State are getting better...there is a greater pool of talent. The one thing that can launch BYU to a new level is getting into a P5 Conference. I think Tom Holmoe knows this and working hard at making it happen. The fact that the P5 conferences consider BYU a P5 opponent is a good thing. Flame away.
