My rely to this thread: UCLA now requiring a Chicano Studies class
I made a statement about how this might be so some of the other ethic groups at ucla would learn more about Latinos. I went on to state that there aren't many Caucasians at ucla like there use to be. Me comment was sort of tongue and cheek but also some truth to it, without a bunch of facts and studies to support it.

I didn't go back to read the replies until today, as well as me getting some BM proving that it is harder for Asians to get in than Caucasians, etc...

My argument wasn't that it should be easier for a particular group or other to get in, but what I have noticed, Talking to a ton of HS parents and I also happen to have a friend who went to UCLA and worked for the admission dept at UCI, is that there appears to be a trend Amoung the UC as well as even the Cal State schools where they are accepting less Calif residents and more out of state and out of country students (not referring to race, but more a reflection or correlation on getting in more based on if they are NOT residents and will pay out of state tuition).

That is really my biggest point, the Calif schools are turning their backs on Calif residents simply to get out of state tuition. This way the school gets the regular funding from the state (residents) and also money from out of state tuition students. In other words, the state is broke and is basing admission on tuition and no longer cares if someone is a resident. It doesn't really effect me, as my daughter is at BYUI, and never even applied to any state school, but I hear the frustration from a lot of parents where I live in Orange County.

Before anyone sends a bunch of studies, please compare the demographics of UCLA now compared to 20-30 years ago (not based on race but residents). I do have some interesting numbers. At Santa Margarita Catholic HS, they send out a letter to all the parents regarding how many kids got accepted to the schools they applied. (Not where they are going to attend, but to show a pattern where kids from the school have been getting accepted).

Some interesting stats. Of a class of almost 450 seniors
11 got in to a UC system school (ucla, Berkeley, UCI, UCSD, UCSB, UCDavis, UC Santa Cruz, UC riverside, UC San Francisco, UC Merced).

23 got into TCU
19 got into SMU
22 got into Alabama
4 got into UCLA

Also, very high numbers at UT, Arizona, ASU, Oregon, UW, CU

The interesting thing is that a lot of the parents are kind of becoming a little bitter regarding the Cal schools (kind of like the LDS parents that have kids not get into BYU). Now, UCLA is a very hard school to get into, as well as so many of the other UC schools, but these kids at this HS are pretty well prepared for college and the HS has a lot of respect. There is a big pattern of kids going out of state where they use to stay in state.

Btw, I finally found someone who has a daughter at UCLA and I acted very surprised, so I started probing questions, because it is fairly unusual. As expected, she applied when they lived in Baltimore and they moved here after she graduated. Now her son is a Sr and had very little luck in being accepted to schools in Calif, so now he is going to attend NYU (a pretty decent school). Another I am close to has a daughter that has been accepted to TCU and SMU and Georgetown. Looks like she will be going to Georgetown.
