Ted Williams may be the greatest hitter ever, but he was a horrible defensive
player. He admitted to not really caring about D. Willie Mays may not have had the batting average that Williams had, but he was one of the best defensive players of all time, hit for power at least as well as Williams and stole way more bases.

Ted Williams was an all-timer. But you can't be a one dimensional player and be the GOAT. Also, not something you can really measure, but Willie Mays played the first half of his career in an era where it was harder to be a black baseball player than a white one. The off field stuff and harassment a black player had to deal with in the 50s is significant.
