It's a dying sport. A lot of the hype was based of course on the caliber of the
fighters (although both are past their prime). However, I'd say lots of the hype was based on nostalgia for the sport. A lot of old school boxing fans were tuning in to remember the good old days when boxing was a popular well respected sport. There will likely never be another "blockbuster" fight that brings this much attention in a long long time (maybe never again).

Disclaimer- I'm a very casual fan and don't know much at all about the sport. It's not hard to see why it's dying
