Help me out with how a homeowner's insurance claim works
In April we had a bad storm come through with 100 mph winds and hail. I've had two adjustors out, and I talked with the latest one over the weekend. His report is going to call for a new roof, new siding, shutters, gutters & downspouts, soffits, and some structural repairs to the house and interior painting where water came through. His report also is going to say that the barn is damaged and the entire metal roof and west and north facing sides (also metal) needs replaced. I'm guessing the total assessed damage will be in the $60-$65K range.

The adjustor says a check will be made payable to me and my mortgage company jointly.

I'm going to hire a roofer and general contractor to do the house repairs. I question whether I need to repair the barn at all for a few minor hail dings. The gutters and downspouts don't really need replaced either. If I don't hire someone to repair or replace the items on the barn or the gutters, does the mortgage company get to keep the $? I'd rather take it and put it towards putting granite pavers in our circle drive.
