I'm pretty skeptical with alternative medicine, but there's something to natural
labor and birth. So don't brush it away so quickly.

There's a LOT of research showing that you can increase risks for mom and baby sometimes by introducing interventions too soon, leading to more c-sections, longer recoveries, etc.

I agree that birthing at home alone is risky too, although the research doesn't show the risks to be so tremendous. I would still prefer to have our babies in the hospital, but I no longer think someone is whacked for wanting to do it at home.

To be honest, the best situation would be a birth center attached to a hospital where low-risk moms can have their babies with the minimal amount of intervention needed, but where in an emergency, they can receive hospital services. This would reduce medical costs substantially and provide a better experience for many.

BTW, I'm not anti-epidural or anything like that. If a mom wants it, cool. But I think we need to get past this incorrect assumption that lying flat on your back to give birth strapped to monitors and tubes is the best approach for everyone.

In our case, my wife had two babies with epidurals and three without (hypnobirthing in the hospital with a midwife). By FAR the best labors and recovery experiences were the natural labors. The first time she did the hypnobirthing/no epidural thing, she got right up after delivering our daughter and got to go with me to see her bathed. It was the first time she got to see that, and it was awesome. She was ready to go home that day. It was less painful than the labors with pitocin and epidurals.
