He told me that he's canceling his cable and he's just gonna do Hulu and Netflix from now on. I asked him what about being able to watch live sports and he said he doesn't care anymore. I was a little surprised and asked him about BYU football, and he said he doesn't even care about that anymore. He just basically said that he's lost his passion for BYU and feels like the program is in a decline, and he just doesn't want to bother with it anymore.
Now this shocks me, because my dad used to be a huge BYU fan. He's the one who got me interested in BYU football and sports in general. He took me to a couple of games and I have fond memories of watching games on TV with him when I was younger. I've heard my dad say several times that he used to be a diehard fan, but he's lived and died with BYU way too many times. He did express his disgust with the fact that no BYU players were taken in the draft this year, and he's just generally unhappy with the state of the program under Bronco. He thinks the program plateaued several years ago and is now steadily declining.
It just makes me sad to see my dad become so cynical about BYU football, something that he used to really love with a passion. Now he's gotten to the point where he's apathetic and he says he doesn't even care about sports anymore.
This is what's happening with BYU football. There are many long time fans like my dad who are losing interest and bailing. He's not the only one I've spoken to, but it hurts more because he is my dad and sports used to be something that we had in common with each other. He's the reason I got into sports. It was a way for us to connect. Now we don't have that anymore.
On a side note, if I wasn't such a big sports fan, I would probably cancel my cable as well and just subscribe to Netflix. But I can't bring myself to give up live sports. Maybe when I'm my dad's age, I'll feel differently, especially if things continue on their current trajectory.
