Even if USU goes to the Fiesta Bowl this year (which I doubt)
I'd still prefer BYU to be Independent than in the MWC!

Can you imagine how fans would've felt when both Utah and TCU left, if BYU had stayed in the MWC? We think the program is stagnating now, holy cow it would've been times 10 if that had happened!

I actually am quite pleased with several areas that BYU's heading:

1) On national TV more than all but 15 teams in the nation. That's a lot of teams to be in front of (Top 10% in the nation)
2) Ever heard the statement "it doesn't matter the amount of your friends, it only matters the quality of them?" If there's one friend you need right now, it's ESPN. And BYU's definitely got it, which is opening up lots of doors.
3) National Scheduling, as opposed to regional scheduling. Yes, I realize there are downsides to this when you take away regional rivalries, but as a fan it's fun to play everywhere against different, big time schools!
4) Recognized as P5 equivalent with the 2 P5 conferences that have designated this - ACC and SEC. Did we ever see this happening?
5) Great COA - $4,500/year also top 10% in the nation
6) Great defense capability with Bronco as the DC
7) Top 25 offense with RA
8) Incredibly talented QB coming in (is Tanner the next Jameis?). When BYU has historically blown up college football, it's been with an incredible QB. I think we would've seen this if Taysom hadn't gotten injured, too.
9) Improved bowl situation - we ousted the MWC with the LV and Hawaii bowls (I'm sure they're not happy), and it's kind of fun not knowing which bowl we'll be in at the end of this season. Anyone see this one coming? I didn't, and it's nice to potentially be in for future surprises.
10) Probably the biggest, is the fact that being independent gives us the greatest flexibility to be able to make a move when the time is right. And there will come a time...

Is it disappointing to not have NFL draft picks? Sure (but I think we'll get 2 next year - and maybe another first rounder - 2 first rounders in 3 years is more than any other Utah team can say). Is it disappointing to not be in a P5 conference? Yes, but since when were Mormons ever invited to be with the "cool" kids (and I believe the time will come) - it comes with the territory. Is it disappointing to lose to Utah 4 in a row? Absolutely! But 2 of those games were our fault, and hopefully we'll learn from them.

I'm still just as excited as ever to be a BYU fan. I'll tell you how I wouldn't be excited is if we were still playing New Mexico, UNLV, and Wyoming every year.
