its a good point but part of the reason Utah and USU were so bad was because
Lavell had the program everyone respected and wanted to play for. I get Bronco couldn't do anything about Utah going to the PAC but under Bronco's watch, BYU has gradually become the "less cool" place to play. That's something he could have controlled in my opinion.
