From my experience it definitely correlates.
The BYU fans I know at work and in my extended family are much less excited and less likely to talk about the program now.
When we do talk about BYU football it's more in terms of being worried about the state of the program, especially in relation to our hated rival. Wearing of BYU gear has dropped off substantially in this same sample.

In contrast, co-workers and extended family that are ute fans are excited and energized.
The wearing of ute gear is way up around my workplace, and is noticeable when going out shopping, etc.
My son-in-law who is a ute fan (but otherwise a great guy) was just telling me last night that he is going from 2 season tickets to 5 this year.
