Their military doctrine called for vast numbers of lower tech weaponry to overwhelm the nato forces in a short conventional campaign. Their non-conventional weaponry was what really frightened us. In the end, their ballistic missile technology was far inferior to ours and as it turns out, most of their nukes would not have made it to their targets, likely burning up on re-entry. Their tactical nukes and biological weapons would have been devastating to Eastern Europe and south Florida. Lots of interesting things were learned when the iron curtain came down.
