Say you are a head coach...

you hear of TWO mammoths of young men (6'7 300-400lbs) and you say to yourself....can't wait to see them. You see them, interact with them and realize you would be laughed out of coaching IF you didn't sign these two young men. Both played another physical sport (rugby)

  • One played another sport (basketball)
  • One is good enough to be on an international team, other good enough to go as well
  • One on a mission, losing weight and is a 4.0 student
  • BOTH are intelligent kids with good grades and NO off field issues.
  • BOTH desire to show what they can do
  • BOTH are nimble with a quick lateral movement
  • BOTH are punishing in either direction
  • BOTH can physically dominate the person in front, beside, around, over, under and anywhere else.
  • BOTH are Tongan, with one from Tonga and the other from NZ
  • One is non LDS, recommended by his father (mother) to look at American football
  • Coaches see for first time (some before)
  • One is approached by two other schools...Tongan family connections with one of the schools
  • One coach at another school was first to hear and see about this kid (he passed on great info to BYU)
  • BOTH have a great opportunity to play at the next level (H57 says so)

What would you do in that situation? You simply pull the trigger and say...welcome home...

My personal take on Manase Tu'ungafasi and Taukolo Langi. For BYU, this is a wonderful opportunity to help two young lads receive a world class education and we know BYU takes this seriously. Word to the boys, understood and they are not going to shrink in that responsibility. Education is very important to them personally and individually. Both boys will begin a journey that will start getting more of Tonga noticed than ever before and as more kids see these two young boys play this American sport AND getting their education paid for....more will come

How will this tie into Rugby? I personally hope that this type of international flavor will spawn BYU to rethink their BYUtv segments and start the process of getting BYU rugby out internationaly, especially to Samoa, Fiji, NZ and Tonga. As more young boys see that BYU is the home to national championships in Rugby will make the process EASIER for these young players to attend BYU.

Once at BYU, then football just becomes a scholarship and another possiblity BESIDES the education they first seek (father and mother from both sides are heavily interested).

Where I see Langi playing would be on the DL and BYU will look at Tu'ungafasi at DL as well. He is very capable of playing BOTH sides...OL first though and down the road, I could see Langi AND Tu'ungafasi on the Oline and possibly punching an NFL ticket....
