I'm OK with that comment, he is not a sack guy. But we need a push from the
middle that just was never there last year. Allowing USU's QB to stand in the pocket and then step up while those double moves came open (those were not quick developing, 3 step drop double moves, those were 4-6 second patterns) was just inexcusable and it never really got addressed. We got more heat from the LBs as the season went along but no push at all from the interior line.

The USU game really was a coaching clinic by USU's O coaches. We had a bye week after making Houston and UVA's QBs look like all americans throwing those slow developing out patterns against our soft zone. USU's coaches had to suspect that BYU was working for two weeks on nothing but recognizing the routes and breaking on the ball and closing harder than we had before, to try and be there when the ball got there on those basic routes. The bigger problem was no pass rush, but we saw in that game that USU guessed right. Howell's defense had over compensated so hard to become "closers" that they were sitting ducks for those double moves, and were really never able to adjust. Even though USU went really conservative in the 2nd half, it still looked like they could go over the top just about any time they wanted to as the game wore on.
