doctors are confusing sometimes...
I've been diagnosed with cluster headaches. I've gone through the routine several times over the past decade and am pretty aware of how to treat my case. I've found great relief with Imitrex/Sumatriptan. However, as the cluster progresses, I can get 2 and sometimes 3 headaches per day for a few weeks in a row.

Migraine headaches, like the kind Imitrex was developed to treat, should only come about 4-5 times per month. Because of this, Imitrex is dispensed in 9 pill boxes and one should be PLENTY for a month. You can refill Imitrex 30 days after you've gotten one box.

When I go in to see a family doctor and tell them I've been diagnosed with cluster headaches they nod their head VERY confidently as if to say "Oh certainly, I know all about those. In fact, they were a large part of my dissertation for my MD/PhD". But when it comes time for me to make my request of 40 Imitrex pills to last me one month, they immediately get very, very, paranoid. It's like I'm asking for Oxycontin and they have to get the addict back down. I explain to them I only get this prescription refilled about every 2-4 YEARS, but it does little use. They still squirm.

I get to do the whole thing over again when I go to the pharmacist. They usually assume they know better than the doctor (who had cold feet when she was writing the prescription) and me on how to treat a very rare headache disorder.
