So to add my new driver teenage daughter to our existing auto policy & cars (2), it costs me $1000 more per 6 months. However, since I don't want my daughter driving the larger/newer/more expensive family vehicles, I want to buy a smaller cheaper "first car" for her to drive - say, an $8K used Mazda 3 hatchback. But since the insurance company won't insure her on just one car, but rather ALL cars, I STILL pay the extra $1K and I get to add an ADDITIONAL $1500 per 6 months to insure the new vehicle for ALL drivers. For those scoring at home, that's a total of $5K more per year of insurance cost to add my daughter with her own car that only cost me $8K to begin with.
This is obviously my first foray into the world of teenage driving, so I am just learning what many of you older CBers know all too well. I've always heard the laments of parents of teenage drivers and the insurance costs, but I didn't expect it to be this drastic. My question is, shouldn't you just be able to insure your teenage driver on one inexpensive vehicle? Why must I insure her on more expensive vehicles that she'll never drive?
